In honour of the upcoming nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton, we thought it would be fun to feature a taste of “Royal Britain”. For our members with Royalist curiosities, our friends at VisitBritain offer the following suggestions:

Balmoral Castle, Scotland

Balmoral Castle near Aberdeen in Scotland is the Queen’s private residence. Located on a working estate, Balmoral Castle was a favourite of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The Estate grounds, gardens and the Castle Ballroom are open to visitors from the beginning of April to July. (more…)

Our Recommendation…Britain

Rumoured to be the place where Kate Middleton will spend the night before her wedding, The Goring is regarded as the favourite address for anyone looking for the quintessentially English hotel in the heart of London.

Back in 1910, O.R. Goring, founded the hotel that has carried the family name ever since.

A man of great vision, O.R. Goring persuaded the Duke Of Westminster to sell the plot of land at the Buckingham Palace end of what was to become Beeston Place, where he razed the Sun public house and a string of cottages to make way for the last grand hotel to be built in the Edwardian era. 1. Not only will it be home to London’s 2012 Summer Olympic Games, but England is also the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games. Dr William Penny Brookes, a doctor from Much Wenlock in Shrewsbury, revived the ancient Greek tradition of the Olympic Games when he founded the Wenlock Olympian society in 1850 with his three-day festival of games. The Games became an annual event and included Greek Classical and country sports such as running, football and cricket, but also a competition for “juveniles” and such fun competitions as a “blind wheelbarrow race” or “an old woman’s race for a pound of tea”. Explore. Dream. Discover…Paris – Top 10 Most Romantic Things to do in Paris

By Therese Eley, Director of Member Services

1. Snuggle in Trocadéro Gardens – Find a secluded bench with a stunning view of the Eiffel Tower, snuggle, and wait for the magic moment of the top of the hour when the Eiffel Tower suddenly sparkles for 10 minutes.

2. A Picnic in Luxembourg Gardens – Pick up some fresh bread and cheese and a bottle of vin rouge on your way, then find a quiet spot to reconnect with nature and each other. We suggest finding your way to the more secluded De Medici Fountain, built by Henri IV in 1625 for his wife, Marie De Médici, who was homesick for her native Florence, Italy.

3. Steal a Kiss under the Pont-Marie – Known as the “bridge of lovers”, legend has it that if you kiss under the Pont-Marie and wish for eternal love, your wish will be granted. So hop onto one of the riverboats that travel up and down the Seine and seal your relationship with a kiss under this famous bridge.

4. Speak the Language of Love at the “Wall of Love” – Le Mur des Je T’aime (the Wall of Love) is a mural beautifully inscribed with the words “I love you” in 311 languages. The red splashes signify “broken hearts” which the artist hopes the mural will cure.

5. Practice your French Kiss on the Most Romantic Bridge in Paris – The Pont des Arts, located between the 1st and 6th arrondissements, offers one of the most romantic views in the world. From its centre one has a 360º panorama of famous Paris sights such as the Ile de la Cite, Notre Dame, the Louvre, the Musee d’Orsay, and more. But beyond the view, this has become a popular location for lovers to declare their eternal love for each other by writing their ames on a padlock and locking it to the bridge.

6. Enjoy a feast of love at Lapérouse – Located in an elegant townhouse on the Seine, Lapérouse has a long history of romantic entanglements. In the late 1800′s, it was popular among famous French courtesans as a rendezvous spot for illicit liaisons with their high society clients. Upon receiving their payment in diamonds, the courtesans would then scratch the mirrors in the dining room to ensure the diamonds were not fakes. Today, you can reserve one of their private dining salons for your own romantic tryst, indulge in a decadent French feast, and lounge on the sumptuous red velvet couches… don’t worry, the maître d’ will not interrupt or enter until you’ve summoned him with the pull of a cord.

7. Take a stroll through Versaille – This decadent palace and its expansive gardens are a setting straight out of a fairy tale. Originally designated as the centre for the French royal court and government by Louis XIV, the Sun King, in 1682, the gardens at the Chateau de Versaille offer an idyllic setting for a romantic stroll with your sweetie.

8. Join the Carnival of Lovers at the Musee Carnavalet – Today, the Musee Carnavalet is the official museum of Parisian History, and it is not without its own provocative past itself. In the 1500s, the mansion in which the museum resides was the home of the beautiful young woman named Madame de Kernevenoy, whose husband had been killed in a duel, leaving her a widow at age 25. Renowned for her beauty, she was later nicknamed “Carnevalet”  after the never-ending carnival of courtiers who would line up outside her residence. Its lavish gardens and secluded museum hallways are the perfect setting for honouring the 500 year history of passion witnessed in this decadent mansion.

9. Love at the Louvre – One of the world’s best museums, the Louvre is filled with history’s masterworks, many of which were inspired by and depict the many facets of love, from the first seeds of romance to sensual, passionate intrigues and loves lost. Follow the “I Love You” thematic trail through the museum to discover how artists from antiquity to the 18th century have chosen to represent amorous relationships.

10. And of course… A Kiss atop the Eiffel Tower -  With the glittering city of lights twinkling before you, need we say more?

Explore. Dream. Discover…Hawaii

By Therese Eley, Director of Member Services

When we were discussing our theme for this month’s newsletter, I immediately offered to write the feature article on this one. My partner, Chris, and I will be heading to Hawaii in a few short weeks to spend Christmas there with my family. So of course I’ve been putting my MSR skills to good use researching all the fabulous things we can do while we are there – and scouting out the best value, of course – MSR habits can sure come in handy!

Now Hawaii is a destination that many of us are already pretty familiar with – it is our most popular destination among Discovery Club Members – but have you done all of the best things to do in Hawaii? Check out our list of Top 10 Things to do in Hawaii and brush up on some of your Hawaii Trivia while you’re at it!

Some Hawaiian Trivia:

- Hawaii is the newest American state, moving up from its territorial status in 1959.
- It is the only state consisting entirely of islands and the only state located outside of North America
- It is home to the worlds tallest mountain: Mauna Kea rises out of the ocean 13,796 ft, though it extends a further 19,704 ft down to the ocean floor, making it taller than Mt. Everest.
- Because the Hawaiian islands rose up out of the ocean as the result of volcanic activity, all life that exists there today originally had to come from somewhere else, courtesy either of the wind carrying it there, birds dropping it there, or the waves drifting it there (including its human population, which originally arrived from various parts of Polynesia)
- Prior to 1893, Hawaii was ruled as a kingdom, after all of the populated islands were united under the rule of King Kamehameha in 1810.
- Oahu is the most densely populated island, and its major city, Honolulu, is the state capital. The Big Island of Hawai’i and Maui are the next most populous islands, and accordingly these are the three most popular tourist destinations, with Kaua’i and Lana’i gaining in popularity as more exclusive, quiet retreats.
- With a warm temperate climate year round, it really has only 2 main seasons: the dry season (May-October) and the wet season (October to April). Temperatures typically hover around 31ºC (high 80sºF) in summer and around 28ºC (low to mid- 80sºF) in the winter – making it a very popular Christmas destination for North Americans.

Top 10 Things to do in Hawaii

1. See it from the sky! Hawaii boasts some of the most spectacular coastal and topographical scenery. From lush green canyons to soaring mountains, active volcanoes, plunging waterfalls and shear coastal cliffs. There are several companies that offer either airplane or helicopter aerial tours, and I highly recommend you do this at least once. It’s a great way to truly witness the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands.

2. Take a tour to Kauai’s Waimea Canyon, hailed as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific by Mark Twain. The canyon is a mile wide, 10 miles long, and 3,600 ft deep and offers jaw-dropping spectacles of nature.

3. Kahuwa Falls on Molokai- The island of Molokai is home to one of Hawaii’s most splendid natural wonders, the Kahiwa Falls. These amazing waterfalls are the tallest in the entire state of Hawaii and tower 1,750 feet above the ground.

4. Bike Maui’s Haleakala Volcano – There are many tour companies that offer a trip up to the top of this dormant volcano, almost 3000 ft above sea level, where you can watch the sun rise over maui, illuminating this amazing geological wonder. You can actually go right up to explore the crater! Then hop on a bike and leisurely roll all the way down to the bottom of the mountain (either as part of a tour or self-guided).

5. Golf on any of Hawaii’s world class courses – lush green fairways with swaying palm trees and flowering vegetation, overlooking the perfect azure ocean… can you think of a better place to play golf? There are more than 80 courses on 6 islands, so if golf is your passion, there are definitely plenty of opportunities for you to indulge!

6. Shop and Dine Waikiki – from artist galleries and boutique shops to large shopping malls, Waikiki is a shoppers heaven! And when you’ve shopped up an appetite, there is a plethora of dining option to satisfy – from casual to fine dining, offering everything from local fare to virtually any ethnic flavours you could imagine.

7. Snorkel Molokini – Molokini, located several miles off the coast of Maui is the most popular snorkeling site in all of Hawaii. This sunken volcanic crater tenderly embraces its calm clear waters, making it an ideal home for several species of colourful tropical fish and even sea turtles. If snorkeling isn’t your thing, there’s no need for you to miss out on this natural wonder… there are glass bottom boat tours that can give you the same visual experience, while remaining much drier!

8. Visit the Oahu Polynesian Cultural Centre – located about one hour’s scenic drive from Waikiki, this is the top paid Hawaiian attraction for a reason.Visitors will get an opportunity to tour a series of seven villages depicting the lives of tribes found on Tonga, Samoa, Hawaii and Tahiti, just to name a few. Choose your method of transportation: by foot, via tram or even by canoe!

9. Pearl Harbor – One of the most popular landmarks in Hawaii, Pearl Harbor is the largest natural harbour in the state and also the only naval base in the United States to have the distinction to be recognized as a National Historical Landmark. Many guests of the Hawaiian islands often find themselves gravitating to the USS Arizona Memorial to pay their respects to the victims of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. This special memorial spans the actual submerged wreckage of the ship Arizona, which was struck on that fateful day.

10. Take in a Hawaiian Luau – No visit to the Hawaiian Islands is complete without experiencing an authentic Hawaiian Luau. Feast on succulent Polynesian fare while you enjoy an exhilarating spectacle of exotic music, grass skirted hula dancers and face-painted fire dancers, showcasing the cultures and traditions of the Polynesian people.

The Great Wall of China, stretching over 8,850km, is one of the most recognizable structures on earth.

With such a vast and fascinating landscape of travel opportunities available in Asia, I found it impossible to limit our recommendation to only one hotel, so I have expanded our recommendations to a glittering example in each of the 5 countries Kyla featured in her article. These are truly some of the most stunning hotels in our collection, and indeed the world… they are each worth taking the time to dream about, believe me!
