5 Things You May Not Know About Britain

1. Not only will it be home to London’s 2012 Summer Olympic Games, but England is also the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games. Dr William Penny Brookes, a doctor from Much Wenlock in Shrewsbury, revived the ancient Greek tradition of the Olympic Games when he founded the Wenlock Olympian society in 1850 with his three-day festival of games. The Games became an annual event and included Greek Classical and country sports such as running, football and cricket, but also a competition for “juveniles” and such fun competitions as a “blind wheelbarrow race” or “an old woman’s race for a pound of tea”. Around 300 years ago, taking a Grand Tour of Europe became a veritable rite of passage for the elite. It was considered a standard part of an aristocratic education; before one was considered ready to settle down and take up the responsibilities and duties of one’s position, it was first advisable to travel Europe’s diverse cultures with the aim of broadening the mind. I’m a lucky lady… My “job” involves spending a fair amount of time researching the most amazing travel destinations on the planet. Our philosophy is: our Members deserve nothing but the best this world has to offer – so my colleague, Brooklyn, and I scour the world (and the web) for those spectacular hotels and resorts that match this lofty standard.
